It doesn’t help that I’m writing this in December and it's pitch black when I get up, and stays a monotonous shade of grey for the entire day, before fading back-to-black by 5 pm (cue ACDC riff).

Urgh. It’s no wonder we put up our Christmas tree in November. (And you better believe it will remain up until February).

The 21st Century conventional pace of life is tough on anyone, but big-city life is something else — and it’s especially exacerbated in the winter.

Our daily schedule feels like a military operation, with yours truly barking orders for everyone to be exactly where they are meant to be, at the right time, wearing the right (clean!) clothes.

The glazed-over stare, the mouth ulcers, the discontent when they are not being entertained…

My children go from school to after-school activity, to the TV, to bed, repeat. And I know it’s the same in cities all over the world, not just here in Istanbul. The expectations of children at school and home are high. (The ones from me, often far too high).
